What is The Anniversary Massage about?

Dan has only bought Lauren a candle, and she has booked him deep tissue and hot stones, then said no to the couples package, insisting the day is his.

Lauren has done the anniversary properly: a massage at home with Veronica, who is booked solid for months, and the full menu of deep tissue and hot stones. Dan has bought her a candle. She declines to join in, insisting the day belongs to him, and settles down to work in the next room, close enough to call through with questions about scents, chargers and whether he is behaving.

The Anniversary Massage turns the intake form into flirtation. Veronica asks about rings, injuries, range of motion and how Dan likes it, and Lauren cheerfully answers some of those questions for him from next door, without seeming to notice how they sound. Dan, who admits to being very vanilla, is plainly out of his depth. Veronica treats his tension as the job, and keeps reminding him what his wife has paid for.

The set-up comes in Dan's own words: an anniversary massage, booked by his wife, sounds sweet until it is not. Lauren sings Veronica's praises, deep tissue, hot stones, the lot, and when the couples package is mentioned she says she refused it, since today is about him. Dan's own gift, he realises, was a candle. Lauren goes off to work next door and tells him to enjoy himself.

Is this his first time, Veronica wants to know; with a professional, Dan admits. She promises gentleness, passes on Lauren's warning that he is hard to relax, and asks where to focus: shoulders, mostly. Lauren checks whether he is behaving and wants to know, lavender or vanilla? Very vanilla, Dan replies. Veronica pegs him as someone who bottles everything up, which suits her fine, and passes him a single item to wear, with strict orders that it be the only one.

Veronica spots that Dan's ring is off; the oil ruins gold, he explains. The questionnaire that follows wanders from injuries to range of motion, and Lauren chips in from the next room, flagging his shoulder and volunteering that he is very flexible. Asked how he likes it, Dan confesses he would not know. They will find out, Veronica says.

Lauren's search for her phone charger gives Veronica an opening: she tells Dan to stay put and shuts the door, saying it keeps the heat in and the racket out. The racket, Dan notes, is his wife. She replies that she sees no ring. Dan calls that low, and she takes the word literally, saying that must be where the stress is, then asks him to turn over. When Lauren wants to know if it is good, Veronica reports a very tense client and points out that the full treatment is what his wife bought.

How much of the 90 minutes will Lauren hear?

Lauren is a door away and keeps calling through, the ring is off, and Veronica has made her reading of the booking plain.
