The Prince's Last Week Unwed: a champion's ribbon handed to the wrong lady

What is The Prince's Last Week Unwed about?

The prince hits dead centre to become champion, custom says the ribbon belongs to his bride, and he gives it to Lady Antonella instead of Princess Maren.

Princess Maren is the bride the prince’s father picked for him a winter ago, and the wedding is near enough that the court is already celebrating. Lady Antonella, his step-cousin, rides for four days to arrive before any other guest. She says she has come to watch him wed, but her first private words are about a night they shared long ago in the family home, and whether he would like it repeated.

The tension in The Prince’s Last Week Unwed is public as much as private. Contests, banquets and toasts all take place under the eyes of the court, so every gesture towards Antonella can be read as a declaration. Maren is warm and eager, and her trust makes the betrayal harder to excuse. Antonella, meanwhile, has made it clear that she wants a decision rather than a token.

Episode 1: A ribbon meant for the bride

The Prince's Last Week Unwed, episode 1 · open to anyone, no login

Lady Antonella's first words to her step-cousin concern the princess he is about to marry, followed by the news that four days in the saddle have made her the earliest guest. He answers that such devotion is typical of her. Then the court makes way for Princess Maren, presented to everyone as the prince's bride.

At the contest the prince strikes dead centre. Custom says the champion presents his ribbon to his bride, yet he offers it to Antonella. Does he understand what he has done, she asks, and is it meant as a declaration? Their night long ago is still on her mind, she says, and she wants to know whether he would have her again. The feast that evening is her chosen moment: she will come looking for him there, and he is free to leave Maren behind in her seat.

Episode 2: Cups raised at the feast

Maren tells the prince that once they are wed she will be wholly his, and asks whether he is nervous. Her mother says a bride should not come to her husband's door the night before, she adds, but she might anyway. Once the feast is under way, Antonella spots his untouched plate, asks what is weighing on him and, with a polite word to Maren, takes him aside.

Alone with him, she brings up the winter when his father settled on Maren, and explains that she travelled here to learn whether that decision would keep him from her, and whether he still remembered their nights in the family home. He reminds her that he gave her the ribbon; she answers that she wants the man, not the ribbon. When Maren announces that the cups are full, Antonella tells him to let the bride toast alone and draws him behind a curtain, promising not to wait for the cups to empty.

Will the prince still say his vows to Maren?

By the end of the free episodes the prince has twice chosen Antonella over his bride, once in front of the court and once behind a curtain. Antonella has said plainly that she wants him rather than his favour, and Maren has hinted that she may come to his door before the wedding night. Nobody yet knows whether the wedding goes ahead or whether anyone at court read the ribbon for what it was. Episodes 3 to 5 carry the week to its end.
