What is The King's Chambermaid about?

Sent by the queen to dress the king, the servant remarks that nobody told her how quickly to do it, and he notes that his wife has sent him her prettiest maid.

Seven days of Harvest Court are about to begin, and the king’s marriage is a matter of politics rather than feeling. The woman the queen sends up to dress him comes from the kitchens, works at her own unhurried pace and has a ready answer for everything he says. One small accident with his ring shows what kind of king he is. An attendant offers to deal with her, and the king promises to take the hand of anyone who touches her.

Being caught carries a real price in this castle. A servant found in the royal bedchamber could hang, and the queen has a habit of appearing at doors. The chambermaid knows all of that and turns up at midnight regardless, after a year of admiring him from below stairs. She also refuses to be taken for granted: either the king asks her to stay, out loud, or she goes back downstairs.

She arrives in the royal chamber with the queen's instructions to dress the king, adding that the queen never said how slowly. He observes that a week of Harvest Court is starting and his wife has sent him her prettiest servant, then asks her to fetch his ring. When something goes wrong with it, an attendant scolds her and offers to deal with her; the king warns that touching her will cost the man his hand.

She tells him nobody has ever stopped a hand for her before. The queen calls from the door that the court is waiting, and the king answers that the court can wait on its king. Before he goes, he asks what he must do to see her again that evening. Her reply: midnight is when she comes to ready his bed, so that is where he should be.

She finds him already waiting and remarks that he is early, and he notes that she came. She confesses a year of watching him from her place in the kitchens, drawn by the fact that he alone in the castle thanks the people who serve him. He warns that she could hang for this. Then make it worth hanging for, she replies, and sets her terms: tell her to stay, or she walks back to the kitchens.

His answer is brief, and she stays. Moments later the queen is outside, complaining that the hour is late, that she wishes to sleep and asking why the bedchamber door is locked. The chambermaid tells the king what to say, and he calls it through the door himself: tonight the king sleeps alone.
