What is The Witch Who Made Me King about?

Stopped on a woodland path during a hunt, Ser Garrick hears a stranger name him and his weakness at once: nobody will ever crown a bastard knight.

Ser Garrick’s claim to the throne has a flaw he cannot fix with a sword: he was born a bastard. Seven lords must kneel before he can be crowned. Two have already sworn to him, the other five treat his name with contempt, and the synopsis gives him seven days. Behind him the queen regent has a candidate of her own, while ahead, stepping from the trees of the Blackwood, waits a witch who knows exactly what he wants.

Her offer is the whole engine of The Witch Who Made Me King. She can make the five lords kneel, one at a time, and for each of them she asks a night of Garrick’s company. She is not after his soul, she says, only him. Every night brings him a step closer to the crown and further into a debt whose full cost he does not yet know.

Somewhere along the hunt, a woman steps into Garrick's path, calls him by name and tells him what everyone thinks: no one will ever crown a bastard knight. She says she can give him the royal future he is after, and asked what she wants, answers only what he is already riding towards. She lays out his arithmetic too: of the seven lords who must kneel, two have, and the remaining five still despise him.

His sword will win them, Garrick insists. She laughs at the idea, sneers that he is no better than a groom from the stables, and in the same breath says he would make a beautiful king. Her offer leaves little to the imagination: if he visits her when the moon rises and yields to her for the night, one lord will kneel before sunrise. A shout from the hunting party, announcing that the hunt is turning back, ends the meeting.

Garrick turns up as instructed, and the witch observes drily that they always come. He demands her price. It is one night for every lord who kneels, five lords and five nights, and she is clear that his soul does not interest her, only he does. Refusing, she warns, means Haldan laughing at his coronation, the crown passing to the queen regent's chosen man and Garrick remaining a knight for ever.

His squire then brings news that the queen regent has riders searching the wood for him, and Garrick's answer is that she can search all she likes. The witch adds a final condition: point the squire in the wrong direction. Tonight, she promises, Garrick will find out exactly what a crown costs.

Will the first lord kneel by dawn as the witch promised?

Garrick has heard the full terms and has not walked out, so the free episodes leave him on the edge of the first payment. Riders loyal to the queen regent are combing the Blackwood, his squire is about to be misled, and five lords still have to bend the knee.
