Twenty years of marriage have ended, and the house sale is set for Friday, which is also when Amanda’s son Rory flies home. Until then the job of moving her out falls to his best friend, chosen mainly for owning a van. Rory’s one request on the phone is that his friend look after his mother, who has had a hard year. Amanda, meeting the helper for the first time in a while, seems to think her son chose well.

In Packing Up My Best Friend’s Mom, every box is a test. Keep or toss is Amanda’s game, and the objects she picks out are the ones that remind her how invisible she felt in her marriage, to a husband she has to correct to ex-husband in mid-sentence. Viewings, a flirtatious visitor called Tamsin and Rory’s regular check-in calls keep interrupting, and each interruption makes his request sound a little less innocent.

Amanda greets the helper by joking that Rory mentioned the van and left out the rest. Rory, flying home on Friday, wants his mother moved out before then, and on the phone he begs his friend to take good care of her because the year has been rough. Amanda sends back word that she is in good hands.

The first box starts the game. Amanda holds up something her husband ignored for twenty years and has the helper shut his eyes for a moment before the reveal. A visitor bustles in with news of a viewing in ten minutes, offers to keep buyers downstairs and admires his hands on her way out. Amanda imagines her husband's reaction, swiftly correcting herself to ex-husband, and leads the helper into Rory's old room, where the phone rings again and the friend promises Rory there is nothing to worry about.

Narration sets the day's task: Amanda's bedroom, with the house sale on Friday. She is pleased he came back. Asked keep or toss, he says keep, and she approves, adding that her bedroom has not seen a man like him in a long time. Tamsin then looks in, reads the room instantly and invites him to call her once he is done here.

Tamsin retreats, for now at least, once Amanda accuses her of trying to poach the helper. Alone with him, Amanda says she needs him, then confesses that nobody in two decades of marriage made her feel desired the way he does. Her closing move is to quote Rory back at him: her son wanted her looked after, and she means to hold his friend to it.

Will Rory hear about it before he lands on Friday?

Episode 2 leaves the helper holding a promise to Rory that Amanda reads very differently. The house still has rooms to empty and a sale to complete on Friday, Rory keeps phoning, and Tamsin has made an offer of her own and only stepped back for now.
