My Neighbor Stopped Closing The Blinds: morning stretches on a deck next door

What is My Neighbor Stopped Closing The Blinds about?

Brandi does not stop when she sees him looking, and when he starts to deny watching her every morning, she cuts in to say that maybe she likes it.

The narrator’s mornings follow a routine he would rather not explain: next door, his married neighbour Brandi exercises on her deck, and he watches. One morning she spots him and does not even pause. Doug, her husband, is on nights and asleep until noon, so for much of the day Brandi has the house, and her own time, entirely to herself.

What drives the story is that Brandi is never the one caught out. She has known about her watcher for a while, enjoys the attention and sets every term herself: when he comes over, what they do and how close Doug is allowed to get. In My Neighbor Stopped Closing The Blinds, the sleeping husband is part of the thrill rather than an obstacle to it.

Episode 1: Doug comes home to sleep

The neighbour sums it up in a few lines: the woman next door has a husband, that husband works nights, and today she noticed him watching and did not stop. Brandi then confronts him about watching her every morning. He starts to protest that he was not, and she answers that maybe she likes it.

Doug gets in from his shift, tells Bren he is heading to bed and asks for some quiet. She promises to be very quiet. Once he has gone, she explains his routine, nights at work and sleep until noon, and tells her neighbour that watching costs nothing but there could be much more. Her invitation is for tomorrow, with Doug away until eight.

He takes up the invitation, and Brandi greets him as though she knew he would come. She suggests they start with a stretch and offers to show him, which brings them both down to the floor. Breathe, she tells him, and she comments that he is very tense. Asked about Doug, she assures him the husband still has two hours of his shift to go.

Then Doug's voice calls out to Bren that he got off early, long before the two hours are up. Brandi does not panic. She has her neighbour lie back, asks for his silence and, with her husband back in the house, promises him an experience he will not forget.

Can Brandi keep the visit secret now Doug is home early?

By episode 2 one rule has replaced another: watching from next door was free, but now the neighbour is inside, and Doug has broken his own timetable by coming home early. Brandi has shown that risk does not slow her down, and she has asked her guest only to stay quiet. Whether Doug walks into the room, and what he would make of it, is where the story stands when episodes 3 to 5 take over.
