Then she has a new idea, a VIP Bali bed with curtains charged to Mum's card, and you ask yourself whether you should refuse.

Harriet slips into a room she has no business being in and confesses something she has hidden for three years. At the wedding, when every eye was on you and her mum on the dance floor, hers were on you alone, and she has imagined you often since. You confess in return that you have been looking at her all day, as have half the men by the pool, then remind her that you are her stepdad.

She waves that away and wants you to say out loud that you want her; what goes on tour, she insists, stays on tour. You stammer, mention her mum, and she tells you not to bother finishing because she can see the answer. At that point your wife rings, well enough at last to eat and asking for biscuits from the small shop, and Harriet coaches you to answer ten minutes.
