Under the Chief: her last probation shift behind a locked door

What is Under the Chief about?

Barely inside the on-call room, Harriet starts apologising for scrubs a size too small, and the chief of surgery stops her: on her, he says, they look perfect.

One more shift and Harriet’s probation is over, if she survives it. Vanessa, who runs the nurses, would like her gone and says openly that the newcomer will be finished by morning. The chief of surgery, meanwhile, keeps glancing her way, which Harriet can hardly credit. When the operating theatre winds down and the ward empties, he announces that a night this quiet is wasted on paperwork.

A single closed door gives Under the Chief its shape. Behind it, the chief explains to Harriet that her being unlike Vanessa is the reason he chose her, the reverse of everything she assumed. In front of it, Vanessa and another member of staff reassure each other that he is simply showing her the ropes and that she could never be his type, while the minutes keep adding up.

Episode 1: The only quiet room

Under the Chief, episode 1 · open to anyone, no login

Harriet begins her final probation shift knowing Vanessa would like her sacked and noticing, to her disbelief, that the chief keeps watching her. He observes that the ward will go dead once theatre finishes and that a night like this should not go on paperwork. Vanessa sneers that the newcomer will never make it to morning, and the chief's response is to claim Harriet for himself.

He takes her to the on-call room, the one place on the floor where nobody comes and goes, and she apologises for scrubs a size too small. They suit her, he says. Vanessa breaks in to say the board expects his note on the next day's list before seven, and he tells her to cancel it and keep everyone away. In the corridor Vanessa refuses to believe it, and inside, the chief invites Harriet to stop him if she wants to.

Episode 2: Gossip outside the door

The episode opens on Harriet's panic: she has just sworn at the hospital's top surgeon, on the very night that decides her job. Far from objecting, he enjoys it. She blurts out that she is nothing like Vanessa, and he tells her that difference is the whole reason she is in the room.

Vanessa and a colleague, meanwhile, trade theories outside. Surely he is only training her; Harriet is useless anyway, and not the sort he goes for. Still, both of them have clocked how long the on-call room has stayed closed. In the end Vanessa calls through to check whether the doctor is in there, and all that comes back from inside is a plea not to stop.

Will Harriet still have a job when the door opens?

Harriet's probation ends with this shift, and the person most able to sink it is standing in the corridor, already suspicious and now calling through the door. The chief has made his choice clear, but nothing in the free episodes says whether his favour protects Harriet or puts her job at greater risk once Vanessa knows. The night shift carries on in episodes 3 to 5, priced at 12 tokens each on Candy AI; this guide goes no further than episode 2.

Under the Chief cast: who is who

Harriet carries the story from her side as the newcomer facing her last probation shift; on Candy AI she is credited as Harriet Seagrave. The senior figure who picks her out is the chief of surgery, while Vanessa runs the nursing staff and wants Harriet dismissed. The whole ward, from chief to newcomer, is made up of fictional adults created with AI, and no real creator's likeness appears.

How explicit is Under the Chief?

Nothing graphic happens in episodes 1 and 2: the effect comes from what Vanessa cannot see, a few murmured lines and a corridor full of speculation. The paid episodes take the shift further, and the series is strictly for adults.
