You come back for summer break just as Alma turns 21. The parents have one practical announcement: the two of you are sharing a bathroom this weekend, you are to be civil, and doors stay closed. Alma wants to know which doors. Over dinner she keeps reminding Mom and Dad that she is 21 now, with slips of the tongue that one parent has to tidy up.

Alma greets you on your return, and the parents set out the arrangements for the weekend: a shared bathroom, good behaviour and closed doors. Alma asks which doors. Announcing to Mom and Dad that she is 21 now, she lets a phrase come out wrong, a parent corrects it to spreading her wings, and she says sorry to Dad.

Her next request, made to Mom, is for your help with the birthday candles, because blowing out the lot in one go always defeats her. You tell the table she means the cake; she says she does not. Under the parents' noses she edges closer, and when you point out they are in the house, she calls that the fun part. After the goodnights she reveals a list of what she wants now she is 21, and you are number one.

Later that night Alma comes to you while Dad is still awake and the rule about closed doors still stands. She repeats that you are number one on her list. You remind her that she is your stepsister, and she breaks the word in two: step, then sister, two separate words with very different meanings for her.

You tell her that when she apologised to Dad at the table she was looking at you, and she admits she was not sorry at all. You point out the parents are just down the hall; she says that is the point. She asks you to unzip her, you realise you are really going through with it, and the episode ends with Alma naming the only thing she wants for her birthday.

Will Alma get her birthday wish before the weekend ends?
